Safe, collaborative medication reduction with board-certified expertise.
De-prescribing is the careful, medically supervised process of reducing or stopping medications that may no longer be necessary or beneficial. Many people find themselves taking multiple psychiatric medications that were added over time, sometimes without regular review of whether they are still needed. You might notice side effects that outweigh benefits, feel ready to try managing symptoms with fewer medications, or simply want to understand what you truly need versus what you have been taking out of habit.
This collaborative process involves gradually tapering medications while closely monitoring your symptoms and overall wellbeing. The goal is not necessarily to eliminate all medications, but to find the right balance for where you are in your mental health journey right now. Every person’s situation is unique, and there is no pressure to reduce medications if they are serving you well.
Many patients arrive with prescriptions accumulated across different providers and different periods of their life. A thorough medication review can help clarify what is still serving you and what may be ready to be phased out.
Side effects that outweigh benefits are a common reason to consider de-prescribing. We can evaluate your current regimen and explore whether adjustments, alternatives, or gradual reductions might improve your daily experience.
Life changes. What you needed during a crisis may not be what you need now. We regularly reassess whether your current medications still reflect where you are today.
We have specialized experience helping high-performance individuals carefully review medications that may be interfering with alertness, physical capability, or decision-making demands of their roles.
Pre-conception medication review is an important step for many patients. We can help you evaluate your current regimen and plan a thoughtful approach before conception.
Long-term stability is a good thing and it can also be a signal worth exploring. We approach these conversations without pressure, always putting your comfort and safety first.
Your brain adapts to psychiatric medications over time. When reducing or stopping these medications, your brain needs time to readjust, which is why sudden discontinuation can cause withdrawal symptoms or symptom return. Safe de-prescribing is always gradual, always monitored, and always reversible.
Your de-prescribing journey begins with a thorough review of your current medications, mental health history, and personal goals. We examine when each medication was started, why it was prescribed, and how your symptoms and life circumstances have changed since then.
The actual tapering process is highly individualized, with dose reductions happening gradually over weeks or months depending on the medication type and your response. We schedule more frequent check-ins during active tapering to monitor for withdrawal effects and symptom changes.
If symptoms return at any point, that's a normal part of this process and it's important to contact us. We can slow the taper, pause reductions, or return to a previous dose that maintained your stability. Some people successfully reduce or eliminate certain medications. Others discover their current regimen is optimal. Both outcomes are valid and informative.
Signs you might benefit from a medication review include taking multiple psychiatric drugs added over time, experiencing side effects that impact daily life, just not feeling like yourself while on certain medications, or having life circumstances improve significantly since medications were started.
If symptoms return during de-prescribing, we can slow the taper, pause reductions, or return to a previous dose that maintained your stability. The process is completely reversible, and we prioritize your mental health stability throughout.
We advise that you consult your prescriber to develop a plan toward tapering and stopping your medication. Abrupt discontinuation can cause serious withdrawal effects and symptom recurrence. Professional guidance ensures safe tapering schedules and proper monitoring throughout the process. If you are experiencing thoughts of self-harm, please contact 988 or go to your nearest emergency room.
While therapy is not required, we strongly recommend maintaining existing therapeutic support during medication adjustments to have additional support through the process. When clinically appropriate, we may coordinate with your therapy team to ensure comprehensive care throughout the process.
Appointment frequency increases during active medication tapering, typically every 1 to 2 weeks initially, then spacing out as you stabilize. The exact schedule depends on which medications are being reduced and your individual response to changes.
We accept most major insurance plans including BCBS, Aetna, BCN and Priority Health. Cash pay is also available. Initial evaluation: $300. Follow-up appointments: $125. Contact our office to verify your specific coverage.
